Customer Profiles - Vicki's Menagerie, Rex Mosser of Midway, TX
For a true taste of western life meeting today’s technology, Vicki’s Menagerie in Midway, TX, offers some of the world’s first animal clones.
You may be familiar with the name Feisty Fannie, a record breaking Texas Longhorn cow owned by Rex Mosser. Mosser now boasts nine Feisty Fannie clones, all exceeding their dam in horn growth rates.
“Technology is the greatest thing that has happened to the Longhorn industry,” Mosser said, “It has rejuvenated the way we breed cattle, and you don’t have to be overloaded with bulls. Everyone wants a pasture full of good cows.”
Along with quality Texas Longhorn cattle, Vicki’s Menagerie is home to llamas, miniature donkeys and miniature horses.
Rex Mosser says, “It’s something I just really like. I run my Longhorn business like a hobby, and I’m very lucky to be able to do that.”
After selling his steel fabrication company, Myrex, in Houston, TX, Mosser retired and is enjoying his life on the ranch.
When selecting his Texas Longhorns, Mosser only looks for the very best.
“I really enjoy the Longhorns, and I want the best that I can have. I’m not worried about quantity.”
With a herd approaching 175 head, Mosser said he operates by using all of the latest technology with breeding, embryo transfer and cloning.
“The money is all in the good cows. I breed, buy and clone the best,” he said, “But temperament is also very important because I have my grandkids out with me all the time.”
For the past five years, Mosser has used LonghornMax to help keep his cattle records organized so that he can spend his time outdoors with his cattle and grandkids.
“I think it’s a fantastic program,” he said, “I don’t know where I’d be without it.”
Before LonghornMax, Mosser said he kept records with pencil and paper.
“LonghornMax is real easy. I pull up my animals by ear tag, and I have every piece of information I want,” he said.
Mosser truly enjoys having guests on his ranch, and being able to give tours. LonghornMax even helps him when he’s acting as a tour guide.
“The pasture report is a wonderful tool for when you have guests,” he said, “It breaks everything up by pasture, and tells you which cows are in that pasture.”
Mosser also appreciates the management information he is able to easily enter into LonghornMax.
“For someone who is not experienced on the computer, it’s very simple to use, and keeps so much information. I keep track of all my breedings, birthdates and calving dates. I’ve started using pictures, and I’m getting into the medical area,” he said.
