Customer Profiles - Stanley Cattle Co., David Stanley of China Spring, TX

In the fall of 2000, David Stanley of Stanley Cattle Co. began his Texas Longhorn operation. His ranch, located just outside of Waco, Texas, in China Spring, runs 80 to 100 head of Texas Longhorn cattle, depending on the time of year.

Stanley works for ConvergeMark, a marketing and consulting firm.

"It's the business that supports my cow habit," he said.

Stanley said his Longhorn herd focuses on Butler family genetics. His operation has recently added a major asset.

"I was able to partner with Charlie and Dana Buenger to buy a half interest in 'Coach,' which is arguably the top herd sire of the current generation of Longhorns," he said, "I have great expectations that this will put us over the top on quality."

Stanley said he has used LonghornMax to keep his records since 2001, after a friend told him about the basic platform of the software.

"It [LonghornMax] made more sense than anything else in the marketplace," he said, "I tried the test version, and just fell in love with it."

Stanley originally used a computer spreadsheet for record keeping, then another software program that was geared toward Longhorns, but said he found it very cumbersome.

"Then I found LonghornMax, and it was really easy to use and did most of the things I needed," he said, "They [Cattlesoft] have also been very responsive to customer suggestions-it's an ongoing improvement plan."

Stanley suggested that other LonghornMax users add their data as it happens, to avoid having to rely on their memory for later input.

He said his favorite feature in LonghornMax was simply the function of instant updating.

"When you make a change, it goes everywhere it needs to go, there is no reason for duplicating efforts," he said, "For example, if you add a calf, it is automatically recorded under the mama."

Stanley said he also enjoys the report feature, especially the cattle inventory report and sale catalog creator. He also uses the pedigree reports for sales.

"Being a part of the Butler breeders group, being able to track pedigrees is really important," he said, "Being able to have a five-generation pedigree at our sale is a huge thing. At the touch of a button, I can print accurate information."

Stanley Cattle Co. is moving into the future with superior genetics and herd improvement, keeping accurate and detailed records in LonghornMax every step of the way.

"It [LonghornMax] makes managing the Longhorn business easier," he said, "You can spend time focusing on what you need to focus on, not worrying about records because it does it for you."
