Customer Success Story - Semkin Longhorns
This year, Charlene Semkin celebrates 30 years of success with her Texas Longhorn cattle.
Located in Perry, Oklahoma, Semkin Longhorns raises 300 head of Longhorn cattle, including five herd sires. Their extensive AI program has allowed them to produce high quality cattle, and they now sell semen from over 50 bulls.
They have recently expanded to ship cattle internationally, and Semkin said a large percentage of their marketing is now via the Internet.
Semkin, a U.S. Coast Guard Captain, also sails internationally and makes boat deliveries throughout the U.S.
She said she first learned about LonghornMax software at the TLBAA World Show in 2001, and has used the software in her operation since 2002. Before the introduction of LonghornMax, Semkin had developed her own software in Microsoft® Access®. She said her software was based on the same record keeping principles as LonghornMax, but did not operate with near the ease or efficiency.
"The duplication of entries went away with LonghornMax," she said.
Semkin said that LonghornMax is especially helpful for those involved in private treaty sales and marketing. She said that although private treaty can be difficult, "LonghornMax makes private treaty marketing a possibility."
"It [LonghornMax] has totally and completely changed my office load," she said. "It's not just for record keeping. It's also a sales and marketing tool."
Semkin said her favorite features in the software are the pedigree and picture capabilities and Herd Update.
"When someone calls and wants a picture, if you have utilized the tools in LonghornMax and have a picture file, in a split second you can have a picture of the sire, dam and the animal they are interested in," she said. "You can have all that in the mail 5 minutes after they call."
Semkin encouraged other software users to make use of the picture tools available in LonghornMax. She also appreciates the time saved by using Herd Update, compared to entering each animal by hand in the past.
Semkin said she uses the inventory and price list reports most often, and that they have proved to be valuable in her operation.
"LonghornMax has enabled me to keep far better records," she said. "It has something for everyone's needs."
