Customer Profiles - Lazy SP Ranch, Deborah Piper-Slaughter of Snowflake, AZ
“You’re a Texan, I’m almost a Texan, why don’t we get Longhorns?”
This is the question Deborah Piper-Slaughter asked her husband after spending months researching which type of cattle they wanted to start their ranch. Now one of only ten Texas Longhorn breeders in the state of Arizona, Deborah said she and her husband Levi “got bitten by the Longhorn bug,” after purchasing their first cows three years ago.
A native Texan, Levi grew up around cattle, and always knew he wanted to have them again someday.
Deborah said, “All my life, I just wanted to live on a ranch. I went to the University of Texas and fell in love with Longhorns.”
With 26 Longhorns already roaming Lazy SP Ranch, they expect about a dozen calves this summer from their cow herd.
“When I first started looking at Longhorns, I just fell in love with everything about them,” she said, “I think we have every color there is.”
Last November, Deborah attended the Bovine Elite AI and palpation clinic in College Station, TX, and plans to AI her first cow this June. She said that Lazy SP is headed in the direction of basing their herd on a well-researched, focused AI program.
For now, Levi and Deborah are running a fence company to support their cattle endeavors, and Deborah is also the choir master and organist at their church in Pinetop, AZ.
She said they began using LonghornMax the day they bought their first Longhorn cows.
Deborah said, “When we went to pick up our first cows at Jacari Ranch, Carrie asked if I had a computer and told me about the software. She said, ‘I don’t think you can do a ranch without it.’”
She said she downloaded the trial version the next morning, and purchased the software forty-eight hours later.
“I have been using it ever since,” she said, “I couldn’t see doing this without a good computer software package.”
She said that LonghornMax was so easy-to-use that she found nearly everything she needed by just playing around with the program to figure it out. She suggested that new LonghornMax customers try the same to find what they need from the software and figure out how to modify the customizable fields.
Her favorite feature in LonghornMax is the pedigrees.
“On most of my cows, I am able to go back eight to ten generations,” she said, “It has really helped when looking at AI herd sires because I could look at their pedigrees and their calves, and compare it to my heifers. It helps me make careful, accurate choices on things as important as choosing bulls.”
Deborah said that although she has not used the sale catalog creator yet, she really likes the idea.
“It’s one feature I will find to be extremely helpful. It seems to be a very, very valuable tool for marketing that I will use in the future,” she said.
“LonghornMax is an essential tool for cattle breeders in this era of computerized marketing,” Deborah said.
