Customer Profiles - Cloud 9 Longhorns, Roger Hutton of Southlake, TX
Only 11 miles from the DFW airport, Roger Hutton of Southlake, TX, runs about 60 head of Texas Longhorn cattle. He began his venture in the Longhorn breed in 1997, with only three cows.
Hutton’s Longhorn cattle offer him enjoyment outside of running his high-end consulting and engineering business, specializing in IT and telecommunications.
“I’ve changed a lot in the last few years,” he said, “I’ve gone heavily to AI and ET breeding to get that upper end, higher quality animal.”
To manage his cattle, Hutton relies on the record keeping abilities of the LonghornMax software.
“Once I got to the point where my herd was a good size, I needed something to help manage it all,” he said.
Hutton even uses reports and information from LonghornMax to keep his website updated with pictures, pedigrees and horn measurements.
“I really like the ability to incorporate pictures of animals with sires and dams to create a pictorial history,” he said, “It’s a nice feature for visual people.”
He appreciates the time saving features LonghornMax offers by reducing data entry.
“From a record keeping standpoint, I like that it’s all so well integrated. You can put information in on a cow, and it automatically updates her calf’s record. It updates everything that information is associated with,” Hutton said, “When I think about how much time I spend keeping records, I know it would take me ten times as long without [LonghornMax].”
He also said that he has found LonghornMax to be very user-friendly and easy to learn.
“I can’t imagine a breeder having very animals who wouldn’t have to have this software. I wouldn’t be able to manage my information without it,” Hutton said.
