Customer Profiles - CC Land & Cattle Company, Carol Carlson of Oklahoma City, OK
Carol Carlson knows what it takes to produce quality Texas Longhorn cattle.
"I've learned what sells," she said, "Horns first, color second, disposition third and conformation fourth."
Carlson is the owner of CC Land & Cattle Company, just north of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In addition to her Texas Longhorns, Carlson is also a bail bondsman, private investigator, and is involved in real estate.
With over a decade of experience with Longhorn cattle, she currently runs a herd of 50 females and 4 bulls, with a large spring calf crop.
Carlson began using LonghornMax to help manage her cattle in 2002, after learning about the software program at the Horn Showcase in Ft. Worth, Texas.
With the help of her herd sire, Gatillero, Carlson has received recognition for her breeding program and the gentleness of her animals.
She said that when calves are weaned at CC Land & Cattle, they are all moved to the ranch house, where they stay for about three weeks to become social.
Carlson said much of her recent success is due to the popularity of her Gatillero heifers, due to their early horn growth and chocolate color.
Carlson said the pasture inventory report in LonghornMax helps her when she visits different pastures.
"If I go to one pasture, and I know there's supposed to be 10 females and 11 calves, but I see 12 calves, I know to figure out where it came from," she said.
Carlson said LonghornMax has also been beneficial in trying to keep up with which cows have been exposed to which bulls and in marketing her cattle to new customers.
"It's pretty cool when you keep records good enough to have something in print to show new owner," she said.
Carlson said she uses the sale catalog creator to print individual pages for each animal she owns.
"I keep a book with all my cattle in it, all in alphabetical order with a picture," she said, "If a visitor is interested in certain ones, I load them up with literature, take that page out of the book and get a sales package going."
She said this often saves time with customers, allowing them to find cattle they are interested in before leaving the office.
