Customer Profiles - A Splash of Color Longhorns, Kay Roush of Schulenburg, TX
For "a splash of color," travel to Schulenburg, Texas, where Kay and Ted Roush run their Texas Longhorn operation on 86 acres. What adds color to this ranch? Along with their Longhorn cattle enterprise, they also raise and sell peacocks.
A Splash of Color Longhorns manages a herd that consists of four to five herd sires, and 20 cows per herd in a rotational pasture system.
They have been in operation since 1996, and Kay Roush kept such in-depth records that she was asked to help develop LonghornMax for use by other Texas Longhorn breeders. Roush had previously kept her records in Microsoft® Excel®.
Roush hands out a LonghornMax brochure with every cattle sale she makes. When asked what her favorite feature was, she said, "Everything's great about it!"
She said that the features she appreciates the most are the pictures, which allow her to see sires, dams and what different relations look like, and the sale catalog.
"Before, I was printing a 3 page pedigree," she said. "LonghornMax is much more convenient and cost effective. And it saves a ton on my printer!"
Roush said the reports she uses most often are the pasture inventory and summary sheet.
"They're handy when we're on trips," she said. "If we have someone to check on things, they know exactly how many cows are supposed to be in each pasture."
Roush also talked about the ease of use that has been incorporated into the software, which allows for more efficiency in the record keeping process.
"If time is money, LonghornMax is the way to go," she said. "It saves time and money."
"Just take the time to enter your cattle," she said. "It will cut your work in 1/10 of the time it takes to keep up with your records."
Roush said their ranch had about 140 head when they purchased the first version of the software.
She said, "I spent two days entering cattle, but once I did, I could do reports in two minutes versus the 20 minutes it had previously taken."
Roush was confident other ranchers would find the software easy to use and the time they saved invaluable once they transferred their records into LonghornMax 2006.
"They'll love it once they do it," she said.
