Pictures are not appearing in LonghornMax

There are 3 possible reasons why a picture would not appear in LonghornMax 2006:

1. The actual picture is not in the location that the link shows in LonghornMax.
2. The picture is extremely large in size.
3. Microsoft Office is not on the computer (for .jpg picture files)

There is only 1 reason why a picture would not appear in LonghornMax CS:
1. The actual picture is not in the location that the link shows in LonghornMax.

1. The actual picture is not in the location that the link shows in LonghornMax.

To minimize data file size, LonghornMax simply links to the pictures rather than actually storing them in the file. This helps ensure that your LonghornMax backup file will fit on a CD/disk and can easily be emailed if needed.

If you've already linked pictures in LonghornMax and now are not appearing, you will want to be sure they are still in the same location as when you linked them in LonghornMax. For example, if you linked cow 1's picture to c:\my pictures\cow1.jpg, be sure that's where the picture stays (or update the picture location link in LonghornMax if you move or rename the picture).

If you are using LonghornMax on multiple computers, you will want to be sure that the picture files are copied to the same location on the second computer as they are on the first computer since that's where LonghornMax is looking for the picture. For example, if cow 1's picture is linked to c:\my pictures\cow 1.jpg on the first computer, copy those pictures to that same location on the second computer so that they will appear on the second computer in LonghornMax.

2. The picture is extremely large in size.

The first 3 LonghornMax versions (version 1, 2, and 2006) were developed on Microsoft Access 1997 technology. At the time, a 2MB picture was a normal/average size. Now cameras produce 8 and 10MB sized files, many times larger than the picture sizes were when the previous versions of LonghornMax were developed. To have LonghornMax 2006 handle large picture sizes, you can make a copy of the actual picture and use a graphics program to reduce the file size to a more manageable size (such as 640x480 or similar to resizing a picture for your website). Websites that have extremely large picture sizes are slow to load, and this is the same idea of LonghornMax 2006 in that reducing the picture file size helps a website load faster and have them work better in LonghornMax 2006.

Since LonghornMax CS is based on more current technology (Access 2007), large pictures are now handled much better. You can simply link to the actual picture without first needing to resize it.

3.  Microsoft Office is not on the computer (for .jpg picture files)

Microsoft requires Microsoft Office (such as Word or Excel) to be on the computer to work with jpg picture files when programs (such as LonghornMax 2006) were based on Microsoft Access 1997 technology. If you do not want to install Office on the computer, you can use a graphics program to change the picture files to .bmp. Though they may not look as clear and crisp in LonghornMax 2006, this does provide a workaround for not needing Office if that's not an option.

With LonghornMax CS being based on newer technology, Microsoft has decided to no longer require Microsoft Office be on computers to work with .jpg pictures so Office does not need to be installed on the computer to display .jpg pictures in LonghornMax CS.
