Industry Profile - Ervin Kaatz with Santa Gertrudis Breeders International
From a farming and ranching family in Round Rock, TX, Ervin Kaatz found his motivation in his high school agricultural education instructor, Earl Seay. He is now celebrating more than forty years of making his own mark on the cattle industry.
Kaatz entered Texas A&M University in 1963 to major in animal science. His education was put on hold while he served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army, but he returned to complete his degree in 1971.
Kaatz received his first experiences in helping cattle producers as a County Extension Agent with the Texas Cooperative Extension Service upon graduation. After 12 years of service there, he joined the American International Charolais Association as an Area Fieldman. In 2001, Kaatz became the Executive Director of the Santa Gertrudis Breeders International, located in Kingsville, TX.
Santa Gertrudis Breeders International is the official registry association for Santa Gertrudis cattle.
“The breed association services are designed to provide members with the tools necessary to compete and succeed in the beef cattle industry today,” Kaatz said.
He said he enjoys facing new challenges through this position, and his ability to meet them within the structure of the organization.
“It provides me the opportunity to address the real challenges of a changing beef cattle industry,” he said.
From this position, Kaatz has been able to witness how CattleMax assists the producers he serves.
“It provides a system which enables our breeders to maintain and evaluate their cattle records,” he said, “Our breeders want a management system that is compatible with the association’s database and easy to work with.”
